Watson, Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy

my understanding is that in the end, you have to play concrete moves. if your "positional understanding" cannot be translated into good moves, it's completely worthless.

it could be a bit of a semantics matter :p
@JanTouchTheSun
You are completely right. All it takes to become GM is to remember some opening theory and understand ONE book on endgames. Would you be willing to bet on you in a match against an IM or GM, where you can use an opening database, any book you like, tablebases, basically anything but an engine?
LeeroyJenkins
Just using the endgame book during the game is not usefull at all. Knowing how to apply the ideas in it is usefull and makes you a much better player.
Imagine you have your middle game where you already dont blunder your pieces, you know how to handle different kind of positions, and your tactics is not that bad. Isnt it enough to know all of your opening theory and how to apply the endgame technics to become an IM or a GM? If not then I can tell you that there is not many phases left to learn and you are just wrong.
What was misleading in your comment was that you mentioned those chess game phases ( some openigs, endgames ) as it would be something very easy to learn. But it is not.

@MasterZaitsev
Sorry, i forgot the /s. If you read the comment i was replying too you might be able to figure out what i meant.

@JanTouchTheSun
"I believe if I knew all my opening theory and remember and know how to apply all of the themes in the Dvoretsky's endgame book I am a GM."
You made it sound easy. Not me. Learn some openings, understand the stuff in one book. Boom. You are a GM. Even when using an opening database you will rarely even reach a playable endgame. You simply have no idea how good GMs are (or how bad you are).
LeeroyJenkins :
If you read that sentence one more time and try to understand it you will realise I didnt write that it is easy.
But never mind...I am leaving this conversation
Ok, i read it one more time. You still make it sound way too easy. And you still have no idea what you are talking about. My point that you won't be able to even reach an endgame while playing with an opening database still stands.
