CM Malik Curriah

23 year old Candidate Master Malik Curriah. Chess Coach.

I learned chess at the age of 10 playing on my mother's personal computer. I learned the rules by observing the scope of legal moves allowed (ironically, because I got bored reading manuals, and couldn't wait to play) and by following the general flow of the game between myself and the weak ai used in Microsoft's "chess titans" .

After years of struggle against the machine, ultimately beating its highest level around age 13. I turned my focus to humans. I placed third in my first OTB tournament, the national u16 championships.
I have since won one U18 and two U20 championships in my country and earned my CM title after scoring 5.5/9 in my regions subzonals

My peak fide rating is 2087 which I earned shortly before the break in OTB classical chess due to coronavirus which has not since returned.

I have done training sessions with the top rated Jamaican players Fide1900-2300 for the last 4 years ever since i was invited to be the assistant coach for the Jamaican Olympiad team in 2018. Before that i have years of experience teaching beginners how to move pieces and the basics of opening and endgame theory.

For my play, my best skills are my ability to calculate and my intuition.
For my coaching, it's practical and fun.

Play, Analyse, Diagnose, Study, Repeat.
I focus less on strict opening preparation and more on the discovery of ideas and tactical nuance in my Analysis.
