Watching the Al Jazeera documentary on the invasion and aftermath, this question is still on my mind. They walked right in, the Hamas militants themselves surprised and confused by their progress. They expected to be slaughtered running towards machine guns, and then remembered as martyrs, but they actually got in in literal droves.
This doesn't fully make sense to me, especially considering that Israel defense organizations knew about the plan and they had the date too, that they had received early warnings on the morning itself, and even convened to discuss a response hours prior to the attacks. They decided to do nothing. Why?
Now Al Jazeera suggests that the IDF underestimated the attack and overestimated their own defense systems and capability. But I don't think that fully explains what happened. The attackers were barely met with /any/ resistance, indicating more than underestimation. Underestimation is when you have some extra defenses in place. They clearly took little to none such provisions.
I do not recommend watching the Al Jazeera documentary to everyone. The footage shows countless brutal inhumanities from both Palestinians and Israeli. They are shocking and may cause a traumatic response even in those viewing the camera footage. That said, to those who can, I think it shows an accurate and chronological account of the invasion and what happened afterwards.
The question the documentary rightfully asked is why was Israel lying about what happened, even when the facts about what really did happen were bad and disturbing in themselves?
But the question it left with me is this one. Is it possible that Netanyahu decided to allow for a tactical defeat, before containing it, in order to attain a higher, more strategic objective in the form of a justification and rationale for the destruction of Gaza he already envisioned?
