Charity? Non-profit? No profit?

Non profit model is fine, but the for profit model is the only way to significantly grow something since there are strong incentives and they will always have more funds to do so. Some organizations have seperated for profit and non profit sections. In chess that could mean having non profit place to play games and analyze, but have for profit options for competition and high level tournaments. Look at FIFA or the NFL or NBA or even boxing, those sports grow by having exclusivity, high quality content, and tools for fans. Chess isn't a professional sport and doesn't have quite the same appeal, but games like League of Legends draw millions of viewers without most of those players ever playing the game. Chess can have that if it is marketed correctly and have the funds to do so, which is only going to come from a for profit organization.

Maybe that's not the goal, I think the lichess goal is noble, but growing the game. Is going to require a lot more than a nice website.
It's really nice, that Lichess is free. But how does Lichess pay the staff? Or what we call "staff", are volunteer developers?
Thank you guys for your altruistic mentality, and your magnificent work and tenacious effort, for maintaining this exemplary place, where we can all play, learn and have friendship with chess players all over the world. Free and for the love of chess and always working. Thank you, thank you very much.
Great post, extremely clear and well-written, I think I'm going to use it for business English teaching purposes.
